Gransfors Bruk Replacement Handle Interoperability Guide
Will this Gransfors Bruk Handle Fit My Axe?
We get this question alot. While Gransfors Bruk replacement handles will of course fit the Gransfors axe model that it is designed for, determining if they will work with other axe manufacturer's models is a tricky proposition, as there is absolutely no standardization of eyes (the hole in the axe head the handle seats into) in terms of size or shape: some are round, some oval, others tear-drop shaped.
In order to assist customers in determining interoperability of Gransfors handles, we've created a guide to the eye shapes and sizes that Gransfors handles are designed for. The images and measurements below are of the axe eye: not the pre-installed or installed handle top. As the wood will mushroom slightly above the eye once the wooden wedge is installed and trimmed, installed dimensions of a handle may be slightly larger than the eye. Replacement handles are designed with a taper - so handle tops of replacement handles pre-installation will measure slightly smaller than the eye.
To ascertain if the handle will fit your axe, first check if the eye shape is similar. Even if the overall dimensions are the same, a teardrop shaped handle will not install properly into an oval shaped eye - similarly, a round handle will not seat properly into an oval eye.
Once a similar shape is established, check the overall measurements. If your eye is smaller than the measurements, the replacement handle can be shaved down and trimmed to allow for a fit. If your eye is very slightly bigger than the eye in our guide (by 1 - 3 mm), once the wedge is installed, the handle will still fit. If however, your eye is more than 3mm larger, getting a good fit that is secure will be compromised or impossible.
